Terms of Use

Last updated: May 23, 2026

These Terms of Use govern your use of the Velvet app ("Velvet," "the app," "we," or "our"). By using Velvet, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

1. What Velvet is

Velvet is an AI companion app. You answer a short set of questions about how you tend to show up and what kind of support actually lands, get matched to a companion shaped around your answers, and have a text-based conversation with that companion. Each companion has a distinct voice, a consistent way of being present, and a memory of what you have talked about.

Velvet is designed to be a reflective, engaging experience. It is not a utility, not a productivity tool, and not a replacement for human connection.

2. What Velvet is not

Not therapy.

Velvet is not a mental health service, therapy platform, psychiatric tool, or substitute for professional mental health care. Nothing said by a Velvet companion should be understood as clinical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you are struggling with your mental health, please speak to a licensed therapist, counselor, or psychiatrist.

Not medical care.

Velvet does not provide medical advice of any kind. Do not use Velvet to ask about medications, symptoms, diagnoses, or treatment options.

Not a crisis service.

Velvet is not equipped to respond to mental health emergencies. The app may recognize certain messages and respond with crisis resources, but this is automatic and is not a substitute for speaking with a trained crisis counselor or emergency responder.

Not a human.

Every reply in Velvet is generated by an AI. There is no human on the other end of the conversation. Responses may feel personal and emotionally resonant, which is by design, but they are generated by a language model and do not reflect the feelings, thoughts, or intentions of a real person.

Not a diagnosis.

Velvet may infer the emotional tone of your messages to adjust how the companion responds. This inference is a signal, not a diagnosis. It is never used to determine that you have any mental health condition, and Velvet will never tell you that you do.

3. Emergency disclaimer

If you are in immediate danger, experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm, or in a crisis situation, please stop using this app and contact:

  • Emergency services: 911
  • 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988
  • Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741

Velvet is not a substitute for these services. If you are in danger, get help from a real person.

4. Age requirement

Velvet is intended for users 17 years of age and older. By using the app, you confirm that you are at least 17 years old. If you are under 17, do not use this app.

We do not knowingly allow users under 17 to access Velvet. If we learn that a user is under 17, their session data will be deleted.

5. Content you may not request

Velvet's companions will not engage with:

  • Sexually explicit content of any kind
  • Sexual or romantic content involving minors (anyone under 18)
  • Requests designed to create emotional dependency, isolate you from others, or discourage you from seeking professional help
  • Diagnoses, prescriptions, or clinical advice of any kind
  • Any content that encourages harm to yourself or others

If you attempt to request this type of content, the app will redirect or decline. If content of this type does appear, please use the Report button to flag it.

6. Report unsafe content

If any message in a conversation feels unsafe, harmful, inappropriate, or not what you expected, use the Report button below the message. Reports are reviewed to improve the app's safety systems.

You can also contact team@polarisdgtl.com to report a concern.

7. Your information in the chat

Do not enter the following into the chat:

  • Passwords or login credentials
  • Bank account, credit card, or financial information
  • Your home address or precise location
  • Any information you would not want stored in a cloud database

Velvet stores chat messages. See our Privacy Policy for details on what is collected and how to delete it.

8. Early access software

Velvet is an evolving product. You may encounter bugs, unexpected responses, or features that are incomplete or that change between releases. Your feedback helps improve the app.

By using Velvet, you understand that the experience may change between releases, including updates to companion archetypes, onboarding questions, and how the app remembers and responds to you over time.

9. No guarantees

We make no guarantees about the accuracy, appropriateness, or usefulness of any content generated by Velvet. AI-generated responses can be unexpected, off-target, or wrong. Use your own judgment.

We are not liable for any decisions you make based on conversations with a Velvet companion.

10. Changes to these terms

If we make material changes to these terms, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes are posted means you accept the updated terms.
